Riggers kick-off 2020 with back to back wins

The Leduc Riggers took victories over the Sherwood Park Knights and the Spruce Grove Regals in overtime.

The Leduc Riggers started the new year with a bang, kicking off 2020 with two consecutive overtime victories this weekend over the Sherwood Park Knights on Friday and the Spruce Grove Regals on Sunday.

The game on Friday saw Riggers forward Hunter Komishke score one minute into the first, kicking off an early one-nothing lead. The Knights quickly retaliated tying the game less than four minutes later with a goal scored by Blake Fletcher. The Riggers were able to one-up the Knights, when Luke Dunlop dumped the puck in the net, leading the Riggers 2-1 heading into the second.

The second period saw the Knights start off strong with 2 consecutive goals by Kees Dux and Blake Fletcher, bumping the score up to 3-2 for the Knights. However, the Riggers were able to rebound with 2 late goals by Carson and Colby Laird, recapturing the lead going into the third.

The Knights took the game to overtime with a goal scored late in the third period by Tristan Welty but ultimately fell when Riggers forward Robert Young scored an unassisted goal in a climactic sequence to secure the win.

The Riggers then looked to carry their momentum into their game two days later against the Spruce Grove Regals.

Nothing was scored in the first, but an eventful second period saw both teams tie the game with Regals forward AJ Kupsch scoring twice and Riggers forwards Colby Laird and Hunter Komishke tying the game 2-2.

Both teams continued to heat up the third period with Kupsch getting the assist on a goal scored by Brendan Bauer. Despite this, Colby Laird was able to tie the game with less than 4 minutes left in the third once again taking the game to overtime.

The game was won when Robert Young scored the game-winning goal for the second time in 2 days less than 5 minutes into overtime.

This brings the Riggers season record up to 16 wins and 13 losses, tallying up to a 55% win percentage.

The Riggers' next game is on January 8th against the Edmonton Royals.
