Wetaskiwin Crime Severity Index rises
Maclean's magazine is set to release it's 2019 list of most dangerous places in Canada.
It's a list that saw Wetaskiwin finish 8th last time around but this year they're expected to hit the top 5 and move into first among Alberta communities.
Community safety has remained a top priority according to the city who say the annual Crime Severity Index has gone up because of some high profile violent offenses and a number of break-and-enters.
Wetaskiwin notes that despite moving up on the Macleans list there has been a decrease in crime overall in Wetaskiwin from 2017-2018.
Mayor Tyler Gandam says the ranking is disheartening but points that a high crime severity index does not automatically mean Wetaskiwin is not safe.
In the 2018 budget cycle, Wetaskiwin council allocated additional resources to the RCMP.
