NDP introduces new rules for construction zones

Improving the flow of traffic is a major priority for the province at the moment.

That's according to the Alberta NDP who recently announced contractors will have to cover speed reduction signs when no one is on the site and if there aren't any safety hazards, meaning you're speeding fines and demerits will only be doubled when construction workers are present.

Leduc-Beaumont MLA Shaye Anderson tells The One News they're also limiting the length of highway lane closures.

"They'll be less than 3 kilometers which will make sure we can get them through these construction zones as quickly as possible, there will also be gradual reduction speed limits as well, there will be clearly consistent signage leading to construction zones and longer transition zones for drivers to slow down," says Anderson.

Anderson says they've heard from a number of people who are frustrated when there are speed reductions or lane closures for no apparent reasons.

The changes are already in effect.  (JSL/THE ONE NEWS)
