Man Charged in Thorsby Gas Station Death

Mitchell Robert Sydlowski faces charge of second degree murder.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit are charging Mitchell Robert Sydlowski, 27 and of Spruce Grove, in the death of Ki Yun Jo last fall.

On October 6th, 2017, 54 year old Ki Yun Jo was killed when he made an attempt to stop a stolen white cube van from fleeing without paying for fuel at the Thorsby Fas Gas, which he owned.  Yun Jo was fatally hit by van.  

After a lengthy investigation by RCMP, Sydlowski was arrested on May 25th at the Edmonton Remand Centre.  Sydlowski is facing charges of second degree murder, failure to remain at the scene of an accident causing death and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.  A bail hearing has been set over until May 29th at Wetaskiwin Provincial Court.

Sydlowski was also charged in June of 2010 at 19 years old, when a police vehicle was stolen and crashed into another vehicle.  For this incident, he was charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer, causing a disturbance in a public place, escaping from lawful custody, theft of a vehicle over $5,000, impaired driving, refusal to comply with a breath demand and dangerous driving.

Also in October of last year, Sydlowski was arrested in Devon by the RCMP's Integrated Crime Reduction Unit for warrants out of Devon and Stony Plain for vehicle thefts and dangerous driving.
