Special milestone for LRC
A big vision to meet the recreational needs of locals and out of towners has paid off handsomely for the city of Leduc.
This year is a special milestone for the Leduc Recreation Centre (LRC) who will celebrate 10 years in a time that has attracted major events and athletes from all over the globe.
Leduc Mayor Bob Young tells The One News what makes the facility so unique from others.
"You don't find many other facilities that have a curling rink, a swimming pool, fieldhouse, and arenas and a fitness centre all in one, and I think the other thing that we were really successful with is the design of the LRC, I think that when you go look at other facilities, I think that we really take advantage of being able to move people around in a very efficient way" says Young.
The LRC was designed using the model of leadership in energy and environmental design and in years to follow other environmental upgrades were implemented including Canada's largest installations of a rooftop solar array in 2016.
Since being opened the facility has won numerous awards including in 2010:
- Canadian Paraplegic Alberta Division- Percy Wickman Accessibility Award
- Alberta Recreation and Parks Association- Alberta Advisory Board on Recreation for the Disabled(AABRD) Award
Canadian Sports Tourism Alliance Prestige Award- Builder of the Year Award.
To commemorate the milestone there will be special events help later this year.
