Leduc curler competing for a chance to go to the Brier
The quest to make it to the Brier begins today for a 22-year-old from Leduc.
Karsten Sturmay is currently the skip of the Alberta Golden Bears team in University curling but he grew up curling at the club here in Leduc.
His team will be one of 12 across the province competing at the Boston Pizza Cup with the winner representing our province at the Brier next month.
Sturmay tells The One News the team learned a valuable lesson from last year's second place finish at this event.
"It's possible, we weren't really expecting to do that well last year but we strung a few games together, got on a roll so now moving into this year we can draw from that experience and know that if we do go out there and if we do play our best we got just as good a shot as anybody else" says Sturmay.
Sturmay says even with the likes of Kevin Koe and defending champion Brenden Bottcher competing against them his team is not intimidated.
The provincial championships get underway today and go until Sunday at the Ellerslie Curling Club.
