Memorial tournament in Devon raising money for the Alberta Cancer Foundation
An annual tradition returns this weekend in Devon.
The Dennis Sernes Memorial slo-pitch tournament opens today and runs until Sunday at the Field of Dreams baseball diamond.
Sernes was an avid baseball player and fan who sadly succumbed to cancer years ago.
His son Justin is one of the organizers of the tournament and he tells The One News what his dad taught him about the game.
"He taught me absolutely everything I know, I've been playing since I was probably 5 years old and I still play pretty much every week, but he always had the competitive edge and yet a friendly face and I definitely took that away from him," says Justin.
Justin goes on to describe what it means to have so much money raised for this tournament "the financial stress when having to deal with trips to the hospital and all the medicine and everything can be overwhelming for lots of families, so to know that we can personally help families take care of some of those costs is a really good feeling" he says.
This is the 16th year of the tournament that has raised close to $120,000 so far the Alberta Cancer Foundation.
Proceeds for this year's tournament will be sent directly to the foundation and its patient financial assistance program.
