Alberta Women's shelters seeing an increase in crisis calls

More women in the province are in serious danger of being harmed or murdered by their partner.

Those are the findings from the Alberta Council of Women's Shelters (ACWS) who saw an increase in crisis calls by 10% over the past 2 years.

Their stats also showed shelters around Alberta are serving more women children and seniors than ever before.

In 2017/18 Alberta's women's shelters accommodated 10,390 women, children, and seniors which brings the total number since 2015 to 30,987

Because of the rising numbers, women's shelters have had to turn away 16,722 people from shelters due to a lack of space.

The women's agency said in the past year 65 percent of women who came to a shelter faced "severe" or "extreme" danger.  (JSL/THE ONE NEWS)
