Peewee girls hockey flourishing in Beaumont
It's been a stellar first season so far for Beaumont's first ever all-girls female peewee hockey team.
The team has a 13-4-1 record at the moment in league play and during Edmonton Minor Hockey week last month, they captured a silver medal in a showcase tournament that featured 30 teams.
The Beaumont female hockey director and peewee coach Richard Chamberland tells The One News the challenges they faced getting a girls team together for the first time.
"I knew that it would be maybe a challenge, my daughter was playing with 7 other girls through Atom so right there we already had half a team so I guess the challenge was just finding another 8 or 9 girls to fill out the team which throughout the summer we were able to draw up some interest we did get some girls that wanted to join us and it just kind of came together from there" says Chamberland.
Long term Chamberland says he'd like to see the girl's program expand to the point where they have a Novice, Atom and Bantam team as well. (JSL/THE ONE NEWS)
