Green Party Candidate says more voices in the legislature are needed
A member of Leduc's Environmental Advisory Board is hoping people in the region think green when they go to the polls tomorrow.
Jenn Roach is hoping to become the first ever MLA from the Green Party whose core values include, ecological wisdom, non-violence, participatory democracy, respect for diversity, social justice and sustainability.
Roach tells The One News the value she see's in having MLA from numerous parties represented in the legislature.
"On the federal level, we've had things like the CPP, bilingualism, the new Canadian flag, and Medicare have all come out of minority government decisions, so it's definitely a good thing to think about having more voices in the legislature, and having the Green Party there to kind of be a mediator of some policy decisions would be a really great thing" says Roach.
Roach goes on to talk about how she can get people back to work without having to depend on oil and gas
"Since 2014, Canada has lost more than 40,000 jobs in the oil and gas industry so investing in renewable energy would make sense, investing in solar would increase employment, in the US they've invested in solar and they've seen a 25% increase in their employment, and there's actually a 93% employment rate for graduates out of renewable energy sectors" she says.
Roach says there are many oil and gas industry jobs that are interchangeable and they could be trained in green technologies.
She adds that she's in favor of bills like the carbon tax because "The Green Party is looking towards the bigger picture, we're looking beyond tomorrow and to implement great policies like electrical vehicle rebates, transitioning the oil and gas workers to renewable energy sectors and also to fund and research the development of technology and governance of the renewable energy, we need the extra money to come from somewhere" she adds.
Roach is hoping to become the first ever MLA from the Green Party whose core values include, ecological wisdom, non-violence, participatory democracy, respect for diversity, social justice and sustainability.
